Myanmar's government warned against "anarchic" activities Monday after 10 Muslims were beaten to death in an area known for sectarian conflict and a dozen other people were injured in a confrontation with police.

Both events took place Sunday in Rakhine state in northwestern Myanmar, a remote area where Buddhist and Muslim relations are strained, sometimes to the point of violence. State television warned that legal action will be taken against those who broke the law.

The report said 300 people stopped a bus carrying Muslims from a religious gathering, dragged out the 10 occupants, beat them to death and burned the vehicle in Taunggup, 300 kilometers (180 miles) north of Yangon.


It said some anti-Muslim pamphlets had been distributed in Taunggup relating to the rape and murder of a young Rakhine girl last month, allegedly by three Muslim youths.

Ethnic conflicts are a major cause of instability in Myanmar, mostly involving sizable minorities along the eastern and northern borders seeking autonomy who battle against the government.

In remote Rakhine, along the frontier with Bangladesh, tension between Buddhist residents and Muslims _ exacerbated by religious differences _ is often strained. The majority of residents are Buddhists from the Rakhine ethnic group, while there is also a large number of Muslims in the area particularly in northern Rakhine state.

Separately, the television report said a mob besieged a police station to demand the release of a man they believed had been arrested in a market dispute. Twelve people were hurt and police detained nine people in that incident in the Rakhine state capital Sittwe, 500 kilometers (300 miles) northwest of Yangon.

The report said police used smoke bombs to clear out the crowd after several hours after twice failing to disperse the crowd by firing shots in the air. Residents reported hearing many gunshots, but the authorities said the 12 injured people had suffered cuts and bruises.The incidents were earlier reported _ without much detail _ on the website of the information ministry, which was launched Monday. The reformist government of elected President Thein Sein is eager to display its openness as it seeks to attract foreign investment after years of isolation

Annette Hamilton, lecturer at the University of New South Wales's Faculty of Arts, said Mrs Suu Kyi's visit helped raise international awareness of Myanmar's refugee issues.

As a result, the Myanmar government might give the 150,000 refugees inside Thailand some hope of returning without facing reprisals, Ms Hamilton said.

Myanmar's improving economy may also offer new opportunities for refugees and migrant workers to find work in their homeland, she said.

Another group in need of help is the hundreds of thousands of Myanmar nationals displaced from their homes, but still living inside Myanmar along the border, she said.

Refugees International says 500,000 Myanmar people have been displaced by conflict in eastern Myanmar and another 800,000 Muslims, known as the Rohingya, in western Myanmar are stateless. About 3 million Myanmar people have fled to neighbouring countries.

Ms Hamilton said ethnic minority people living along the border need help to lead better lives, so they will no longer want to escape into Thailand.

"This is an enormous task. We do not know whether the views of a single person like Aung San Suu Kyi can bring about such an enormous change," she said.

"The international community must take a lead in addressing the problems."

On Saturday, the last day of Mrs Suu Kyi's Thai visit, officials imposed curbs on her inspection of a refugee camp.

Although the Thai government accepted her last-minute request to visit the camp, which has about 50,000 people living on the border between Thailand and Myanmar, officials declined her request for a public address system and barred her from meeting the leaders of ethnic minority groups.

"The Foreign Ministry asked us to keep her visit low-key," said Suriya Prasatbuntitya, the governor of Tak province, where the camp is located.

"They didn't want her trip to become news because they don't want it to affect our relationship with Myanmar."

The government's concerns were heightened when Myanmar president Thein Sein cancelled a trip to Bangkok last week to speak at the World Economic Forum on East Asia, where Mrs Suu Kyi gave an address on Friday.

The Myanmar government expected Mrs Suu Kyi would focus on making changes in parliament, not making overtures to the outside world, when she was released from house arrest and then elected in a by-election on April 1, a Myanmar political observer said.

Ko Tate, secretary of the Assistance Association of the Political Prisoners (AAPP), said Mrs Suu Kyi's visit was welcome even though she was unable to meet ethnic leaders and representatives of democratic organisations based in Thailand, including the AAPP.

"We understand her complicated and confusing situation very well, and managed to hand over our statements and proposals to her delegation," Ko Tate said.

Migrants and refugees who failed to hear her speech were disappointed to have missed her, he said.

Sihasak Phuangketkeow, permanent secretary of the Foreign Ministry, said the government allowed her to visit the places she wanted, but not at the cost of possibly hurting relations with Myanmar.

"Anything in the humanitarian realm is welcome but we have to consider any aspect of the visit that might be politicised. After all, Thai-Myanmar relations are improving," Mr Sihasak said.

ဒီသတ္ျဖတ္မႈဟာ ရမ္းၿမဲၿမိဳ႕နယ္ ေက်ာက္နီေမာ္ရြာက မသီတာေထြးေခၚ ရခုိင္အမ်ိဳးသမီးတေယာက္ ကို ေမလ ၂၈ ရက္ေန႔က အစၥလာမ္ဘာသာ၀င္ လူငယ္ ၃ ေယာက္က အဓမၼျပဳက်င့္သတ္ျဖတ္မႈနဲ႔ ဆက္စပ္ျဖစ္ေပၚလာတာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ မသီတာေထြး သတ္ျဖတ္ခဲ့ရၿပီးတဲ့ေနာက္မွာ ေက်ာက္နီေမာ္ရြာ၊ ရမ္းၿဗဲၿမိဳ႕နဲ႔ ေက်ာက္ျဖဴၿမိဳ႕က လူထုက ကန္႔ကြက္ဆႏၵျပတာေတြ ေတာက္ေလွ်ာက္ျဖစ္ခဲ့ပါတယ္။

ေတာင္ကုတ္ၿမိဳ႕မွာ သတ္ျဖတ္မႈမျဖစ္ပြားခင္ မနက္ခင္းကလည္း လူမ်ိဳးေရးအရ လံႈ႔ေဆာ္တာေတြ ျဖစ္ပြားခဲ့ တယ္လုိ႔ ေတာင္ကုတ္ၿမိဳ႕ခံက ေျပာပါတယ္။

“မိုးလင္းကာစကေနၿပီးေတာ့ ေတာင္ကုတ္ၿမိဳ႕ရဲ႕ေစ်းပတ္ဝန္းက်င္မွာ စာေတြျဖန္႔ၾကတယ္၊ လႈံ႔ေဆာ္ၾက တယ္။ ကုလားေတြ ၿမိဳ႕ဝင္တာ၊ ထြက္တာေတြကို လက္မခံဖို႔၊ ေတြ႔ရင္သတ္ၾကဖို႔ အဲဒါေတြကို လႈံ႔ေဆာ္တဲ့ စာေတြ - အဲဒီ ေက်ာက္နီေမာ္မွာျဖစ္တဲ့ ကေလးမေလးရဲ႕ဓာတ္ပံုေတြနဲ႔ပူးၿပီးေတာ့ လႈံ႔ေဆာ္ထားတာေတြ ရွိတယ္။”

ဒီတုိက္ခုိက္မႈမွာ လူ ၂၀၀ ေလာက္ပါ၀င္တယ္လုိ႔ ေဒသခံေတြက ခန္႔မွန္းပါတယ္။ အခုခ်ိန္ထိေတာ့ တစံု တရာ ဖမ္းဆီးအေရးယူတာ မရိွေသးပါဘူး။ ေသဆံုးသြားသူေတြရဲ့ ႐ုပ္အေလာင္းေတြကိုေတာ့ ဒီကေန႔ သံတဲြၿမိဳ႕မွာ သၿဂႋဳဟ္တယ္လုိ႔ ေျပာပါတယ္။

ေတာင္ကုတ္ၿမိဳ႕၊ အစၥလာမ္ဘာသာ၀င္ေတြသတ္ျဖတ္ခံရတာဟာ တရားဥပေဒစုိးမိုးမႈရဲ့ အားနည္း တာေၾကာင့္ျဖစ္တယ္လို႔ ေတာင္ကုတ္ၿမိဳ႕ အမ်ဳိးသား ဒီမုိကေရစီအဖဲြ႔ခ်ဳပ္က အတြင္းေရးမႉး ဦးခင္လွ က ေျပာပါတယ္။

“က်ေနာ့အေနနဲ႔ေျပာရမယ္ဆိုရင္ေတာ့ တရားဥပေဒစိုးမိုးမႈ မရွိလို႔ ျဖစ္တာလုိ႔ ျမင္တယ္။ ဘာလို႔လဲဆုိေတာ့ အခ်ိန္က ေစာေစာႀကီးပဲ၊ ေလးနာရီခဲြ ေလာက္ပဲ ရွိတယ္။ ျဖစ္တဲ့ကိစၥမွာလည္း တခ်က္တည္း ခုတ္၊ ထိုး၊ သတ္ၿပီးေတာ့ လူတေယာက္ကို ထြက္ေျပးသြားတာမ်ဳိးမဟုတ္ဘူးေပါ့ေနာ္။ တိုင္းျပည္ကို ၿငိမ္ဝပ္ပိျပားဖို႔ ဥပေဒစိုးမိုးဖို႔ ကိုင္တြယ္ေနတဲ့ ပုဂၢိဳလ္ေတြမွာေတာ့ တာဝန္ရွိတယ္လို႔ က်ေနာ္ထင္တယ္။”

ဦးခင္လွက ဒီမုိကေရစီႏိုင္ငံထူေထာင္ေနခ်ိန္မွာေတာ့ လူမ်ိဳးေရး၊ ဘာသာေရး အမုန္းတရားေတြ၊ အာဃတေတြနဲ႔လုပ္ေဆာင္လုိ႔ မရႏိုင္ေၾကာင္းလည္း ေထာက္ျပပါတယ္။ ရခိုင္တိုင္းရင္းသားမ်ားတုိး တက္ေရးပါတီ ဥကၠ႒ ေဒါက္တာေအးေမာင္ကလည္း အခုလို သံုးသပ္ပါတယ္။

“ေတာင္ကုတ္မွာ ျဖစ္သြားတဲ့ကိစၥကလည္းပဲ ဒါ လူအုပ္စုနဲ႔ ထိန္းမႏိုင္ သိမ္းမရ ျဖစ္ၿပီးကာမွ၊ တရားဥပေဒ စိုးမိုးမႈ၊ ဆင္ျခင္စြာထိန္းသိမ္းႏုိင္မႈ အဂၤါရပ္ေတြမွာ တစံုတခု အတုိင္းအတာအထိ ယိုယြင္းသြားတယ္လို႔ သံုးသပ္ပါတယ္။ ေနာင္ ဒါမ်ဳိး ျဖစ္စဥ္ေတြ မျဖစ္ေပၚႏုိင္ေအာင္ ဘာသာအသီးသီးက ပုဂၢိဳလ္ႀကီးေတြနဲ႔ လူထုကို ခ်ျပ၊ ဘာသာရပ္ဆိုင္ရာအရ ေဆြးေႏြး၊ ညႇိညႇိႏႈိင္းႏႈိင္းနဲ႔ ထိန္းထိန္းသိမ္းသိမ္းျဖစ္ဖို႔ ေမတၱာ ရပ္ခံခဲ့ပါတယ္။”

မေန႔ညပိုင္းကလည္း စစ္ေတြၿမိဳ႕မွာ နာဇီေစ်း ေစ်းေကာက္ႏႈန္းျမင့္တက္လာတာကို ဦးေဆာင္ဆႏၵျပခဲ့ သူ ေပ်ာက္ဆံုးတာနဲ႔ပတ္သက္ၿပီး ရဲစခန္းကို ၀ိုင္း၀န္းဆႏၵျပရာက လူထုနဲ႔ ရဲတပ္ဖဲြ႔အၾကားမွာ အခင္းျဖစ္ပြားခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ဆႏၵျပလူထုက ရဲစခန္းကို ပုလင္းေတြ၊ ခဲေတြနဲ႔ ပစ္ေပါက္ခဲ့တာေၾကာင့္ ရဲတပ္ဖဲြ႔ဘက္ကလည္း မုိးေပၚကို ေသနတ္ပစ္ေဖာက္သတိေပးၿပီး ေနာက္ပိုင္းမွာ လူအုပ္အၾကား ပစ္ခတ္ၿဖိဳခြင္းခဲ့ပါတယ္။

CAIRO – Buddhist vigilantes in western Myanmar have attacked a bus and killed nine Muslims in one of the deadliest communal violence in the country.

"More than a hundred people beat and killed those people. The residents even torched the bus," a villager told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

A bus carrying Muslim passengers was attacked near Taunggoke town in the western state of Rakhine late Sunday, June 3.

The attack followed the killing of a Buddhist woman in the area.

Resident Kyaw Min told Reuters that Buddhists "were angered by the authorities' handling" of the attack on the woman, who people in the area said was raped and killed.

Just before Sunday's attack, leaflets bearing a photo of the woman and describing the rape were distributed in the area.

Several residents, who declined to be identified, said the Muslims on the bus were not from the area and were on a visit to Rakhine state.

They suggested those killed may not have any relations to the attack on the woman.

Police have launched an investigation into the attack.

"An investigation is underway but I can't give you any further details," said a police official who requested anonymity.

Rakhine is home to Myanmar's largest concentration of Muslims, but their presence is often resented by the Buddhist majority.

Muslims make up nearly five percent of Myanmar's more than 53 million population.


Less numbered are the Indian-descended Muslims who live in Yangon and ethnic-Chinese Muslims, known as the Panthay.

Muslim groups have blamed the attack on the growing hostile campaigns against the sizable minority.

In a joint statement, eight overseas-based Rohingya rights groups said the attack on "Muslim pilgrims" came after months of anti-Rohingya propaganda stirred up by "extremists and xenophobes".


They called on the government to treat Muslims fairly and tackle "Rakhine terrorism".

Rohingya Muslims have been denied citizenship rights since an amendment to the citizenship laws in 1982 and are treated as illegal immigrants in their own home.

Every year, thousands of minority Muslim Rohingyas flee Myanmar in wooden boats, embarking on a hazardous journey to Thailand or Malaysia in search of a better life.

While some find work as illegal laborers, others are arrested, detained and "repatriated" to a military-ruled country that washed its hands of them decades ago.

Rohingyas say they are deprived of free movement, education and employment in their homeland.

They are not recognized as an ethnic minority by Myanmar and say they suffer human rights abuses at the hands of government officials.Related Links:

A Myanmarese mob has attacked a passenger bus in the Rakhine state in the west of the country, killing at least nine people, an official says.

"We heard nine people were killed by ethnic Rakhine residents in Taunggote town this evening. We do not know the details yet," a government official told AFP on Sunday.


He added that many of the victims were likely to be Muslims who were visiting Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh, from central Myanmar.
A villager from the scene of the attack said a mob of ethnic Rakhines, who are mostly Buddhist, attacked the bus.

"More than a hundred people beat and killed those people. The residents even torched the bus," he said.

"There are not many people at the scene now, only dead bodies on the road. The senior town residents are trying to comfort the people," the man added.

Local residents said that a recent rape and murder of an ethnic Rakhine girl had created sectarian and ethnic tensions in the area.

Another man stated that the attackers killed people in an attempt to capture the supposed killers of the girl who they thought were among the passengers.

Ten Burmese Muslims were killed by Rakhine Buddhist extremists in Taung Gote township of Arakan State in Burma on 3rd June, 2012 in the afternoon. The victims were on the bus on their way to former capital Yangon from Thandwe township of Arakan State. The bus was forcibly stopped by about 300 Rakhine Buddhist extremists at La Wa Ka (immigration) gate in Taung Gote township.

The extremists were shouting "come down if any Kalar passenger is there, we want to kill". (Kalar is a derogatory term use by Buddhist to called people of Islamic Faith [Muslims] in Burma that carries the meaning of inferior and subclass).

The bus in-charge woman closed the door while the conductor came down from the bus and apologizing the extremists not to attack any passenger. But they didn't listen to the conductor's pleas and open the door by force to get on the bus.

"Here are Kalars, here are Kalars" they shouted when they found the Muslims on the bus. At the same time many extremists got into the bus and started beating the Muslims. The Muslims were forcefully taken out of bus as they were being beaten. Eight victims were killed right on the spot. Soon the extremists found that the bus conductor was also a Muslim, then they also killed him at same place.

Again the extremists figured out that the bus in-charge woman is also a Muslim. The woman tried to escape by running into back side of the bus but she couldn't. She was caught by them on the bus and they said that they will kill her by raping. They pulled her from her hairs and took her out of the bus. The extremists men took off all of her clothes. Then the extremists women started beat her legs, hands, waist and neck with sticks and the men pushed into her sex organ with sticks. The men also beats her breast. Later she was taken onto the road and beaten with sticks on her neck continuously till she died.

The bus's registration plate number is 7 (Ga) 7868 and it was also burnt. The dead bodies were kept aside off the road and the extremists threw alcohol bottles, urinate and vomit on the dead bodies.

Six victims are from Taung Twin Gyi township of Mandalay Division, two are from Myaung Mya township of Ayeyarwaddy Division and two are from Thandwe township of Arakan State. Eight victims are identified as they were on religious visit to Thitsar Mosque of Thandwe township and the Tachan Pai Mosque in Yangon has visitors record. The remaining two, the conductor and the bus in-charge cannot be identified by names but believed to be from Thandwe township.

Myanmar officials have reported the deaths of over ten people in Rakhine State, in the west of the country, following ethnic and religious tensions.

On Sunday, ethnic Rakhine residents allegedly set upon the victims, thought to be Muslims visiting the area from central Myanmar.

The recent rape and murder of an ethnic Rakhine girl had stirred the tensions which boiled over on Sunday.

According to witnesses, ethnic Rakhines, who are mostly Buddhist, attacked people they thought might have been responsible for the murder.

Following the killings, a bus was set alight.

Police described many dead bodies on the road following the incident, which was just one of the recent clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh.

Buddhists make up the bulk of the population in Myanmar, while Muslims only represent four percent.

YANGON, June 4, 2012 (AFP) - Police in western Myanmar fired warning shots to disperse an angry crowd as sectarian tensions spread following the mob killing of 10 people, thought to be mostly Muslims, residents said Monday.

Locals reported increased security in Rakhine state along the Bay of Bengal after the flare-up in unrest in the area, which has a large Muslim minority population including the much-persecuted Rohingya.

Hundreds of people were said to have gathered at a police station in the town of Sittwe late Sunday demanding justice because they mistakenly thought a local politician had been kidnapped and killed by Muslims.

"Some drunken people played a leading role. They threw bottles and stones," said Aye Maung, chairman of Rakhine Nationalities Development Party, a political party representing the ethnic Rakhine people.

"The police fired warning shots using rubber bullets. They also used tear gas to disperse the people. I heard about 10 or 11 persons were injured," he told AFP by telephone, adding that the unrest continued until early Monday.

"Some people were also detained for questioning. The situation is under control now," he said.

The violence came hours after a mob of Rakhines -- who are mostly Buddhist -- set upon a bus in Taunggote in Rakhine state that they believed was carrying those responsible for the recent murder-rape of a local girl, residents said.

The death toll from that incident has risen to 10, a government official said Monday. No arrests have been reported in connection with the attack.

While the identity of the victims has not been announced they are thought to have been mostly Muslims visiting from central Myanmar.

Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims occur periodically in Myanmar and Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh, is a flashpoint for tensions.

Buddhists in Rakhine have grown to resent Muslims that have moved into their state from Bangladesh seeking work.

In February 2001, the then-ruling junta declared a curfew in the Rakhine State capital city Sittwe after violent riots broke out between Muslims and Buddhists.

Buddhists make up some 89 percent of the population of Myanmar, with Muslims officially representing four percent.

Pockets of sectarian unrest have occasionally broken out in other parts of the country, where there has been a series of dramatic political reforms since a quasi-civilian regime last year replaced decades of outright military rule.

On behalf of the Rohingya community worldwide, the Arakan Rohingya Union calls on the Government of Myanmar to investigate the brutal killings of ten Muslim passengers by an armed mob of several-hundred ethnic Rakhine in the city of Taung Goke in southern Arakan State, Myanmar. Arakan Rohingya Union condemns the mass killing of innocent civilians in its strongest terms and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

The victims were Muslim pilgrims returning to Yangon (Rangoon) after the completion of their spiritual service at Thandwe Thissa Masjid in Thandwe in southern Arakan on June 3, 2012. The victims also include a Muslim woman, managing the road transportation service for the pilgrims. The Rohingya community is horrified by the news of the dismemberment of the bodies of the victims by the armed mob. 

The government of Myanmar must not allow such heinous crimes against Muslims or any other ethnic groups in Myanmar, and must launch a full investigation on this mass murder. Further, the government has the full responsibility for providing protection to Muslim minorities during this fluid situation in Arakan where organized violence by the

Rakhine is spreading to other cities. During the process of current democratic reforms, the new government of Myanmar must refrain from fabricating or downplaying this barbaric crime as a cover-up.

The Rohingya community also calls on the international community to launch its own investigation on these horrendous murders and must demand the government of Myanmar to fully cooperate with the international investigators.
