An Elderly Widow Robbed And Tortured By Police In Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan – An elderly widow was robbed and tortured by police and their aides in Maung Tola village, Aley Than Kyaw village tract of Maungdaw Township in Arakan state. 

On December 11, 2013 at 8:30 pm, four police from Mawrawaddy outpost accompanied by aides of the Aley Than Kyaw Village Administrator, Kyaw Zeya Oo and Soor Ali, and the aide of police, Ghandi, went into the house of Daw Nur Haba. (d/o late Haji Zafar) this located in Maung Tola village in Aley Than Kyaw village tract. The police said they are in searching for the son of Daw Nur Haba, Shah Alam (35-years-old). They want to arrest him as he complained against the police to regional authorities. 

The police didn’t find Shah Alam at 65-year-old Daw Nur Haba’s house. The aide Kyaw Zeya Oo slapped her very tightly, several times. And the police robbed 300,000 kyats and four pairs of earrings valued about at about 350,000 kyats. When the elderly widow tried to shout for help from the neighbours, the police blew from her back with a gun. They threatened to shoot her if she shouted. 

She was helpless at night and couldn’t inform any authorities. She did got to the office of the Military Security Department on the morning of December 12th and complained about the event that took placed at her house. 

Although she has reported the incident, no action has yet to be taken.
