Up to 100 Burmese protesters have rallied outside Parliament House in the Australian capital Canberra over this week's violence in western Burma.

They are calling on the Australian Government and the United Nations to protect one of Burma's ethnic groups.

The protesters say they are angry at the discrimination and ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims by the Burmese Government.

A state of emergency was declared this week in western Burma where there have been deadly clashes between Buddhists and Muslims.

The protesters say hundreds of Rohingya have been killed and thousands displaced in government-sponsored violence in the country, and say they will take their rally to the Burmese Embassy on Thursday.

Rohingya are a stateless people unrecognised by the Burmese Government.
