A Rohingya Was Shot Dead By Local Police In Taungbro, Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan – An innocent Rohingya from Taungbro sub-region of the Maungdaw Township of Arakan State was shot dead by local police.

On 9pm on October 29, 2013 an innocent Rohingya named Zahid Alam S/o Abdul Hamid from No. (1) Ward in Taungbro sub-region, was fishing in the prawn pond in Kyee Kyun village. He was said to be shot dead by "alcoholic local police" from No. (32) Battalion. It was done without any reason. He died on the spot.

The corpse was sent by police to the sub-region hospital by for postmortem. On October 30, 2013 at 3:20pm, the police brought the corpse to the cemetery in No. (1) Ward, Taungbro sub-region and was buried. The security personnel were placed at the cemetery during the burial. The victim who was brutally killed by police was a Muslim. The local residents were not allowed to have congregational funeral prayer for him. Moreover, the dead body wasn’t handed over to the family.

The family could only watch from far end of the cemetery. Zahid Alam was a poor man and he was surviving by fishing.

Kyee Kyun village is under Kun Thee Bin village tract. The village tract administrator Ah Tun Chay is always buying alcohol for police. He is instructing them to attack local Rohingya Muslims. The local residents in Taungbro sub-region and Kyee Kyun village said that the deathly shooting of Zahid Alam would be instructed by village tract administrator Ah Tun Chay.
