Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK today welcomed British Foreign Secretary William Hague’s statement calling for an end to the violence in Rakhine (Arakan) State, Burma.
The statement called on the authorities to grant full and unhindered humanitarian access to the areas affected; to allow the affected communities to safely return to their homes; and to support the restitution of property that was seriously damaged or destroyed. The statement also encouraged efforts to seek a long term solution to the problems they face in a manner which recognizes their human rights, including their right to nationality, and to take effective steps which prevent any further forced or involuntary displacement and which does not leave them permanently displaced.
The statement also called for the release of all those people who have been arbitrarily detained, irrespective of their ethnic background, and for the government to carry out an independent, fair and prompt investigation into the violence, in particular the allegations of serious crimes within the communities and human rights violations by the security forces, and for those found guilty of such crimes and human rights violations to be held accountable.
BROUK President Tun Khin said, “It is very good to see that the British government is speaking up. Other EU countries should also speak up on the grave human rights violations and great humanitarian disaster facing the Rohingya. Police and Paramilitary forces are still arresting Rohingya in Buthidaung and Maungdaw. Many Rohingyas are dying due to starvation. According to reliable sources, there are about 4200 people living in Mountain Area of Myaybone Township. We need urgent humanitarian assistance to all those in need in Arakan.”
The government is not giving protection to Rohingyas. There needs to be a full independent United Nations investigation into the events that have taken place in Rakhine State.
We call upon the international community, including the European Union, Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United States to ensure that the establishment of such an investigation is included in the text of the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly resolution on Burma, and in the text of the next United Nations Human Rights Council resolution on Burma.
We also call on the international community to pressure the government of Burma to repeal the 1982 citizenship law.

BROUK has received reliable information that the Burmese authorities have tried to deceive UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Mr Tomas Ojea Quintana during his visit to Arakan State.
This morning BROUK received the following information from the ground:
The Maungdaw authorities dressed some Hindu youths as Rohingya religious students with Islamic Molvi dress to meet the delegations where they explained about the situation of Rohingya life, in line with the authorities’ wishes. All the Hindu youths are from Shwezarr village tract, Maungdaw.
At least 500 people have been arrested since the violence. Government authorities moved those arrested Rohingyas from Buthidaung Jail to an unknown location just prior to Quintana visit to the Jail. The relatives of the prisoners do not know where those people were taken after Buthidaung jail.
Many people are living in an open area without any shelter, but sometimes they were brought to designated places and had their pictures taken to show that they were in safe places.
Farmers have been forced to go to the paddy fields in Maungdaw because of the UN envoy’s visit, not because they wanted to do it.
Students and their parents were threatened by the Government authorities to send their children to school during Quintana visit.
BROUK President Tun Khin said “I hope UN Rapporteur Thomas Quintana will find out the real facts and see through the authorities’ fabrications. I would encourage Quintana to visit again to investigate independently the Arakan violence. It is very important that the UN Rapporteur should recommend that a UN Commission of Inquiry is established into the silent killing fields of Arakan.”
Tun Khin said, “ASEAN should play a key role to protect Rohingyas. EU, UN and UK governments have kept silent where Rohingyas are dying day by day as there is no food and water for them. The government is not only blocking aid, but the authorities are also restricting people trading and buying food and water. We would like to recommend that the UN Special Rapporteur supports UN humanitarian intervention in Arakan.”

BROUK has received information from sources from Arakan that police and security forces are continuing to make mass arrests in Burma, and that Rohingya people are being tortured and killed in the process of these arrests. Last night a joint force of police, Lun-Htin (Security Forces), Sa-Ra-Pha (State Affairs Security), and military forces raided Maung Nir Village and ward 2 of Maungdaw Daw. They tightly encircled the entire village and the combined forces entered every house in search of Rohingya Muslims. During the raid the joint forces arrested at least 100 Rohingya’s. 3 Rohingya’s are reported killed and 8 wounded while they were tried to escape. The dead bodies and wounded people were taken away with the security forces trucks. We still do not know where the people were taken.
According our sources in Arakan , the joint forces ( in 10 Trucks) have also surrounded Kiladang village (Maungdaw South ), Udong Village and Myo Thu Gyi Village( Maungdaw) in the afternoon of 4th July. The villagers are afraid that the forces will raid their village tonight (Burmese time). In Sittwe, one Rohingya house was burned down in Bu May village yesterday. One Rohingya girl from (Nazeer Village Ward 5, Sittwe) was raped and tortured by three members of military forces (232-Batallion).
BROUK president Tun Khin said “During the state-sponsored violence many Rohingya were killed by police and security forces. According to people from detention camps near Sittwe, at least 10 Rohingyas are dying everyday because of lack of food, shelter and medicine. The Rohingya can’t go to the any other places till today as there is no protection for Rohingyas. Thein Sein’s regime is not protecting Rohingya, and instead arresting and killing the Rohingyas without any reason. It is time to act for international community to protect Rohingyas. Pressure must be applied on Thein Sein to stop the attacks and stop the arrests. International monitors must be allowed into the area, humanitarian agencies and must have free and unrestricted to access and assist all displaced people.” For more information, Please contact:
