The ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, has taken a personal interest on Rohingya. This week in Phnom Penh, Dr. Surin raised the issue of Rohingya directly with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and Bangladesh. They have both promised to cooperate and will keep ASEAN informed.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers back in July 2009 had tasked the ASEAN Secretariat to monitor the situation and keep them updated. The ASEAN Secretary-General has been following the status. He appreciates the concern of the ASEAN people for the sufferings of the Rohingyas, who are migrant workers in many of the ASEAN Member States.
"We will keep our eyes and ears on the plight of these unfortunate people," said the Secretary-General of ASEAN.
